Graceland Volleyball Sweeps MidAmerica Nazarene, Earns First Conference Win
LAMONI, IOWA – The Graceland claimed its first conference victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating MidAmerica Nazarene University in straight sets (25-17, 25-17, 25-22). This win at the Morden Center marks a significant step forward for Graceland, improving their season record to 2-18 overall and 1-10 in conference play.
Head Coach Stew McDole praised his team's collective effort, saying, "This was good for us. A validation of preparation and team culture. I'm very proud of them – this was a great team effort."
Graceland came out strong in the first set, quickly establishing momentum with efficient sideout play and capitalizing on several service errors by MidAmerica Nazarene. Outside hitter Brenna Crabtree led the charge for the Yellowjackets, registering 11 kills and maintaining a hitting percentage of .286. Graceland's front row consistently found ways to terminate the ball, despite pressure from MidAmerica Nazarene's block.
In the second set, Graceland maintained their rhythm, again jumping out to an early lead. Setter Hailey Kauweloa orchestrated the offense with 14 assists, ensuring her hitters had clean looks at the net. Graceland's serving was also on display, as they recorded a total of eight service aces throughout the match, with senior libero Shelby Jabour accounting for three of them. The defensive backcourt, led by Jabour's 23 digs, provided the foundation for Graceland's consistent transition offense.
MidAmerica Nazarene (11-10, 5-4) struggled to find their offensive groove, finishing with a hitting percentage of just .007. The Pioneers were led by Isabella Munari, who tallied eight kills, and setter Katrina Davis, who contributed 26 assists. However, MidAmerica Nazarene's attack was often stifled by Graceland's disciplined block, with middle blocker Kaylee Baker recording two solo blocks and three block assists.
Graceland controlled the final set, showcasing resilience when MidAmerica Nazarene closed the gap to 23-22 late in the set. The Yellowjackets leaned on senior leadership to close the door, with a timely kill from Crabtree and a service ace from Kauweloa sealing the win.
Coach McDole emphasized the importance of the victory in building momentum for the remainder of the season. "This was not just a win in the standings; it was a statement about how far we've come as a team," McDole said. "Our players have worked hard, and this win is a testament to that effort."
The Yellowjackets will look to continue their winning ways as they head to Des Moines to face Grand View University on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Charles S. Johnson Wellness Center.
