Graceland Women’s Soccer Draws 2-2 Against William Penn in Hard-Fought Conference Match

Lamoni, Iowa - Graceland University's women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw with William Penn University in a tightly contested Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) match on Wednesday at home. The Yellowjackets demonstrated grit and resilience, holding their own against a tough opponent in a game defined by strong defense and opportunistic offense.

The match saw an early breakthrough for Graceland, with midfielder Chloe Montera finding the back of the net unassisted just nine minutes into the first half. Montera's goal gave the Yellowjackets an early advantage, as they dominated possession for much of the opening period. Graceland goalkeeper Maggie Peterson was instrumental throughout the match, recording 10 saves on 12 shots on goal from William Penn.

The second half opened with William Penn pressuring Graceland's defense. The visitors found the equalizer in the 63rd minute when Emma Brandt, assisted by Luca Szucs, placed a shot past Peterson to level the score at 1-1. However, the Yellowjackets quickly responded. Just two minutes later, forward Emily Carmen calmly converted a penalty kick, restoring Graceland's lead.

In the 72nd minute, Brandt struck again for William Penn, scoring her second goal of the match from the penalty spot. Despite several more opportunities from both teams, the match ended in a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes of regulation.

Statistically, the match was balanced, with Graceland registering 14 total shots to William Penn's 15. Graceland had 11 shots on goal, with Carmen and Montera leading the offensive efforts. Meanwhile, William Penn held the edge in corner kicks, 6-3.

Reflecting on the draw, Graceland head coach Randall Porter praised his team's effort but acknowledged the challenges ahead.

"We showed a lot of fight out there today," said Porter. "This group has been through some ups and downs this season, and although the result wasn't exactly what we wanted, we're seeing progress in key areas. Defensively, Maggie [Peterson] had a phenomenal game, and offensively, we were able to capitalize on some of our chances. But there's still work to be done.

"Our focus now is on maintaining our intensity for the full 90 minutes. We need to tighten up defensively and be more clinical in front of goal. There's still time to turn this around, and I fully believe in these players. We're coming together as a unit, and the potential is there. We just need to keep pushing, learn from every game, and the results will follow."

The Yellowjackets, now 4-7-4 overall and 1-5-2 in conference play, will look to build on this performance as they travel to Dubuque, Iowa, to face Clarke University this Saturday. Kickoff at Burrows Field is set for 3 p.m. Graceland will aim to secure a crucial win to keep its postseason hopes alive.
