Andrews' Early Goal Lifts Graceland Past College of Saint Mary
LAMONI, Iowa—The Graceland University women's soccer team secured a 1-0 victory against the College of Saint Mary on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at home. A decisive early goal by forward Cassidy Andrews, unassisted in the 6th minute, proved to be the difference in the tightly contested match.
Graceland (4-2-1) came out aggressively, with Andrews capitalizing on an early chance, recording her first goal of the season. Despite numerous attempts throughout the match, both teams remained scoreless after the early strike. Graceland totaled 10 shots, with eight on target, led by Emily Carmen and Andrews, who combined for six shots on goal.
Graceland's defensive efforts were critical in the win, with goalkeepers Maggie Peterson and Alexia Johnson combining for five saves. Peterson, who started in goal, recorded four crucial saves in the first half, while Johnson kept a clean sheet in the second half, maintaining Graceland's slim advantage.
The College of Saint Mary (0-4-2) responded with five shots, all on goal, led by midfielders Abbie Anderson and Kylie Anderson. However, they were unable to break through Graceland's solid defense. Graceland's defenders, including Samantha Garcia and Catalina Rojas, provided key clearances to limit the Flames' attacking opportunities.
Graceland held a narrow 2-5 disadvantage in corner kicks, but its defense held firm. The Flames' goalkeeper, Alivia Schade, was instrumental in keeping the match close, making seven saves throughout the 90 minutes.
In the second half, Graceland continued to push forward, with Andrews and Carmen testing Schade, but they were unable to add to their lead. The home side's discipline was tested when midfielder Kylie Overkamp received a yellow card in the 76th minute, but the Yellowjackets managed to avoid any further disciplinary issues.
"It was nice to get a win today as we get closer to conference play that begins next week," remarked Head Coach Randall Porter. "We still have areas of the game we need to improve on but we are making progress.
"Our thought our defensive effort was really good again today and that continues to be a hallmark of this team," ended Porter.
With this win, Graceland now stands at 3-2-1 overall headed into this weeks home match against Avila University. The Jackets host the Eagles at the John Rasmusen Soccer Complex Wednesday evening (September 11th) at 7pm.
