GU Women's Basketball Faces Tough Competition Against Sterling

Lamoni, Iowa — The Graceland women's basketball team faced a formidable opponent in Sterling College on Saturday morning at the Morden Center. Despite a spirited effort, the Yellowjackets fell to the unbeaten Sterling team, 94-67, bringing their season record to 2-2. With injuries impacting the rotation, Graceland relied on depth and resilience throughout the game.

The matchup proved challenging as Sterling (5-0) capitalized on its size and efficiency, shooting an impressive 55.2% from the field. The Yellowjackets, led by standout performances from junior Avery Walker-Henry and sophomore Maxine Ampofo, showcased determination despite being short-handed. Walker-Henry recorded a team-high 23 points, adding three 3-pointers and converting 6-of-8 free throws. Ampofo, commanding the paint, contributed 17 points and secured 10 rebounds, marking a solid double-double performance.

Graceland's offensive struggles were evident in the first half, where they managed just 12 points in both the first and second quarters. The team's field goal percentage improved notably in the second half, culminating in a 52.9% shooting effort in the fourth quarter. Yet, Sterling's early 32-12 lead at the end of the first quarter set the tone for the rest of the game.

Head Coach Willie Scott, navigating a roster affected by injuries, spoke to the adversity faced by his team. "Down another starter today, which left us at a disadvantage against a team of Sterling's caliber," Scott said. "Still, I'm very proud that we didn't quit. We've hit a rough patch with injuries, but I know this team will continue fighting until we have our full lineup back."

Sophomore Kayloni Smolley provided additional offensive support, chipping in 12 points, including key second-half baskets that energized the team. Camila Barreno added 8 points, demonstrating her perimeter shooting with two 3-pointers.

Sterling's balanced attack was spearheaded by Korynn Clason, who scored 30 points on 13-of-20 shooting and pulled down 7 rebounds. The visitors leveraged their size advantage, outrebounding Graceland 49-21 and dominating points in the paint, 52-28.

Despite the loss, Graceland displayed moments of cohesive play, highlighted by defensive stops and timely baskets in the third and fourth quarters. Walker-Henry's assertiveness in the third quarter spurred an 18-point period, giving the Yellowjackets a temporary surge.

Reflecting on the season, Coach Scott expressed confidence in the team's potential and the path forward. "We're in a tough phase with so many injuries, but this team is resilient. The lessons from these games will only make us stronger. I'm confident that when we're at full strength, we'll see significant progress and results."

Sterling's aggressive defensive play led to turnovers that they converted into 20 points, further widening the gap. Graceland, however, managed to force 15 turnovers from Sterling and capitalized with 13 points of their own.

As the Yellowjackets prepare for their next game against Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Kehl Center, they aim to regroup and refine their strategies. The team remains determined to bounce back, with players and coaches emphasizing a continued commitment to hard work and resilience.
