Wrestling Drops First Dual of the Season Against Central Methodist
FAYETTE, Mo. – The Graceland men's wrestling team faced off against Central Methodist in a challenging road dual on Tuesday night, ultimately falling 37-6. Despite the team result, the Yellowjackets displayed grit, with several wrestlers delivering determined performances in close matches.
The dual began at 141 pounds, where Graceland's Caden Lopez earned the team's first points with a hard-fought 16-10 decision over Gavin Shoush. Central Methodist responded swiftly, claiming victories in the next six matches. Graceland's Ryan Anderson pushed his 149-pound bout into overtime before falling 13-10 in sudden victory to Nevertesonne Lahens, but showing his toughness and will. At 184 pounds, Joseph Teguia narrowly dropped his bout in a tiebreaker to Sincere Hall-Osbourne, 3-1.
The Yellowjackets saw additional success in the upper weights, as John Schuttler secured a solid 7-3 decision over Jake Henson at 197 pounds. Schuttler's win highlighted his technical precision and ability to dictate the pace in a key victory for Graceland.
However, Central Methodist delivered dominant performances at heavyweight and the lighter weight classes. CMU's Austin Foye (285 pounds) and Arojae Hart (133 pounds) recorded falls to solidify the home team's lead. Graceland also forfeited at 125 and 165 pounds due to lineup limitations, adding to CMU's advantage.
"Defining moments happen in every season, and while this wasn't one of them, how we respond absolutely will be," said Graceland Head Coach Zack Mullins. "I believe wholeheartedly in the ability and potential of this team—we just have to get better, and we will."
In bonus action, Juan Lopez added a highlight for Graceland, earning a 4-0 decision over Jace Brownlow at 174 pounds, further demonstrating the program's potential and competitiveness.
The Yellowjackets will next compete at the Doane Open this Saturday, December 7, in Crete, Nebraska. The event will offer another opportunity for Graceland to gain valuable experience against regional and national competition as they continue to develop throughout the season.
