Graceland University Men’s Soccer Falls to William Penn 2-1 in Tight Conference Clash

Lamoni, Iowa - Graceland University's men's soccer team fought hard in a 2-1 defeat to William Penn University in a Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) showdown on Wednesday. Despite the loss, the Yellowjackets displayed resilience and determination against a physically dominant and tactically difficult William Penn squad.

The match remained scoreless through the first half, with Graceland's goalkeeper, Miguel Roces, making several crucial saves to keep the game level. Roces recorded five saves in total, holding off nine shots in the first half as William Penn pressed forward with their direct, long-ball style of play.

William Penn broke the deadlock early in the second half, with Connor O'Reilly scoring in the 52nd minute off an unassisted effort. However, Graceland responded quickly. Just five minutes later, forward Frederico Duarte Del Nero equalized with a well-placed shot, also unassisted, tying the game at 1-1.

The match remained balanced until the 69th minute, when O'Reilly found the net again, this time assisted by Rob Stoop, giving William Penn a 2-1 advantage. Despite some late pressure and several promising attacks, Graceland was unable to find a second equalizer before the final whistle.

Graceland was outshot 16-5 throughout the game, with William Penn dominating possession and set pieces. The Yellowjackets earned three corner kicks compared to William Penn's two, but were often forced to defend against the visitors' direct, physical approach to the game.

Head coach Bryan Courtney acknowledged the difficulty of playing against William Penn, highlighting their tactical strengths but also emphasizing the learning opportunities for his team.

"William Penn is a very difficult team to play against," Courtney stated. "They have quality players, but it is their tactical style that is particularly challenging. Every ball is played long and direct, and then it becomes a battle for possession of the loose ball."

Coach Courtney also praised his team's effort in handling William Penn's physicality and set plays but noted the need for improvement in key moments.

"I thought we did an exceptional job in dealing with their set plays and their physicality. However, I think we gifted them both of their goals through our own mistakes. If we are a bit better in those moments, it could have been a different result. But credit to them for taking advantage of those opportunities. That's what top teams do."

Looking ahead, Coach Courtney remains optimistic about the season and the team's ability to bounce back. "We will watch the film and move on to the next challenge. Clarke is a very good team as well, but we expect to go there on Saturday and earn some points."

With the loss, Graceland's record now stands at 6-4-4 overall and 2-4-2 in HAAC play. The Yellowjackets will look to rebound this Saturday when they travel to Dubuque, Iowa, to face Clarke University at Burrows Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Graceland aims to secure vital points as they continue to push for a strong finish to the season.
