Graceland Holds Off Central Methodist in Key HAAC Matchup
FAYETTE, Mo. — The Graceland University men's basketball team extended its strong season with a hard-fought 63-56 road victory over Central Methodist University on Saturday. The win improves the Yellowjackets to 19-3 overall and 15-3 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC), while the Eagles drop to 12-11 overall and 9-10 in conference play.
Graceland executed a disciplined game plan, controlling the tempo early with a 27-22 halftime lead before closing out the second half behind key defensive stops and timely shooting. The Yellowjackets shot 40.0% from the field (24-of-60) and 33.3% from beyond the arc (9-of-27) while limiting the Eagles to 35.9% shooting overall and just 20.0% from three-point range.
Head coach Todd Lorenson praised his team's collective effort, especially considering their short-handed lineup.
"Today was the epitome of a team win. Our guys played with a toughness and confidence that it takes. Guys stepped up while we were short-handed to secure a great road win."
Graceland displayed strong defensive intensity, forcing 12 turnovers while holding Central Methodist to five made three-pointers on 25 attempts. The Yellowjackets also controlled the interior, outscoring the Eagles 30-26 in the paint.
Guard Micah Lamberth delivered a crucial double-double, finishing with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and a game-high six assists. His ability to facilitate the offense and control the glass proved vital down the stretch.
"He just keeps getting better every day," Lorenson said. "Tonight's double-double and add in six assists came when we needed it most."
JY Smith played a pivotal role on both ends, contributing 13 points, four steals, and three assists. His early defensive pressure disrupted the Eagles' offense, and his late three-pointer helped seal the win.
"His defensive effort early in the game set the tone for our team," Lorenson said. "His four steals show in the stat sheet, but he had many other plays that don't show up there. His late three really helped put the game away."
Carter Brown added 12 points, hitting four three-pointers to help stretch the defense. Darrius Davis recorded 11 points, three rebounds, and three steals, playing a key role in transition opportunities. Maijhe Wiley provided seven points and five rebounds, helping keep Central Methodist off the boards.
Despite being out-rebounded 42-38, Graceland's defensive pressure forced Central Methodist into difficult shots, holding the Eagles to just five total free-throw attempts in the game.
Graceland maintained its composure in the second half, outscoring Central Methodist 36-34 to secure the road victory. The Yellowjackets' perimeter defense tightened, limiting the Eagles to 41.7% three-point shooting in the second half after they failed to convert a three-pointer in the first half.
Marcus Anthony led Central Methodist with 14 points, while Bol Tong added 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Yellowjackets return to action this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. when they host Mount Mercy College in Lamoni, Iowa, at the Morden Center.
