GU Falls to Defending Champion Ottawa, Sets Sights on Rumble in Rockford

LAMONI, Iowa – The Graceland University women's flag football team faced a formidable challenge Saturday as they took on defending NAIA national champion Ottawa University at home. The Yellowjackets fell 41-0 in a contest that showcased the high-powered Ottawa offense and stingy Braves defense.

The game began with Ottawa striking quickly, scoring on a one-play, 66-yard drive just over three minutes into the first quarter. The Braves' quarterback, Madysen Carrera, continued to exploit gaps in coverage, connecting for six passing touchdowns while completing 12 of 18 passes for 243 yards. Ottawa's defense also made its mark, forcing three interceptions and limiting Graceland's passing game to just 57 yards.

Graceland's offense struggled to find momentum but saw strong contributions from quarterback Shyla Barrios, who led the ground game with 56 rushing yards on eight carries, including a 68-yard run that showcased her playmaking ability. Barrios also completed 10 of 18 passes for 52 yards but faced constant pressure from the Ottawa defense. Caitlin Shannon added seven rushing yards and completed two passes for an additional five yards.

Head coach Aaron Richardson reflected on the game, acknowledging the challenge of facing the reigning national champions.

"We knew Ottawa was going to be tough; they're the defending champs for a reason," Richardson said. "They capitalize on every mistake, and we saw that firsthand today. There were some positives to take away, but we have to clean up our execution and be sharper in all phases."

Defensively, the Yellowjackets were led by Ahmari Byrd and Aiyanna Hannah, who recorded three solo tackles each. Mikiah Verdum provided a key defensive play with an interception, while Jazharia Taylor and Shyla Barrios each forced fumbles.

Next Up: Rumble in Rockford

Graceland will look to regroup as they prepare for the Rumble in Rockford next weekend, hosted by Rockford University. The Yellowjackets will open play on Friday, March 21, at 4 p.m. against Siena Heights.
