
Graceland Women’s Flag Football Moves to 3-0 After Road Wins in Kansas
Newton, KS/Hesston, KS – The Graceland University women's flag football team continued its strong start to the 2025 season, earning two victories on the road Saturday. The Yellowjackets defeated Bethel College (Kan.) 40-21 in Newton, Kansas, before securing a 25-6 win over Hesston College in Hesston, Kansas.
With these wins, Graceland improved to 3-0, building on their season-opening victory against Cottey College in Lamoni on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
Graceland 40, Bethel (Kan.) 21
Graceland used a dominant 21-point second quarter to take control of the game against Bethel. Quarterback Shyla Barrios led the way, throwing for 213 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 102 yards and three scores. Mikiah Verdum was the top target in the passing game, recording 81 receiving yards, including a 62-yard touchdown.
The Yellowjackets' defense made its presence known, forcing three interceptions, including a pick-six by Aiyanna Hannah. The defense held Bethel to 117 rushing yards while making key stops throughout the game.
Graceland 25, Hesston 6
Graceland continued its success later in the day against Hesston College, controlling the game from start to finish. While statistics were not yet available, the Yellowjackets' balanced offensive approach and strong defensive play secured the 25-6 win, completing a successful road trip in Kansas.
Coach Richardson on the Road Wins
Head coach Aaron Richardson praised the team's focus and effort in securing back-to-back victories.
"It was a great trip to Kansas, and getting two wins in the same day is always a good way to build momentum," Richardson said. "I'm really pleased with how we've started the season, but we have to keep improving and moving forward. The team has put in a lot of work in the offseason, and we're seeing that effort pay off early."
Next Game: Home Opener vs. Southwestern
The Yellowjackets return home this Saturday, March 8, for a matchup against Southwestern College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on Huntsman Field in Lamoni. Graceland will look to extend its unbeaten start and defend its home field for the second time this season.
