Graceland Dance Opens Season With Region Championships in Jazz and Hip Hop

JOHNSTON, Iowa – The Graceland University dance team brought home two Regional Championships at the DTU Regionals held at Johnston High School in Johnston, Iowa, on November 16. Competing in jazz and hip hop categories, the Yellowjackets demonstrated their technical prowess and artistry, claiming the top spot in both disciplines.

The event marked the team's return to competition following a successful 2023-24 season, and their performances reflected the preparation and dedication that has become a hallmark of the Graceland program. Head Coach Kat Albertson emphasized the team's approach to competition, focusing on delivering their best performance regardless of outcome.

"It was refreshing to finally be back on the dance floor following such a successful season last year," Albertson said. "Our placement at competitions is never the priority for our team but rather making sure we put our best foot forward every time. Winning is definitely a plus though!"

The Yellowjackets' jazz routine captivated the judges with seamless transitions, expressive movement, and an emphasis on clean lines and extensions. In the hip hop category, the team showcased their athleticism and precision, delivering a high-energy routine that highlighted innovative choreography, sharp isolations, and complex formations.

Sophomore All-American Cadence Sires praised the team's resilience and focus in the face of early-season challenges. "Despite a variety of obstacles the team has faced so far this season, we came together as a unit, continued working hard, and secured a top spot again this year at Regionals," Sires said. "We plan to use these strong first performances as motivation as we prepare to defend our State Title from last year!"

The DTU Regionals provided a competitive stage for programs from across the region, and Graceland rose to the occasion, standing out among a talented field. These victories not only set the tone for the season but also reflect the program's commitment to excellence in NAIA dance.

With the Regional Championships in hand, the team now shifts its focus to the upcoming State Championship, scheduled for December 6 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The event will present another opportunity for the Yellowjackets to showcase their talent and determination on a larger platform.

"Our focus remains on growing as a team and perfecting our craft," Albertson added. "These wins are a testament to the dedication and resilience of our dancers, and we're excited to build on this momentum heading into the state competition."
