Graceland Women’s Soccer Secures Huge 1-0 Victory Over Baker On Senior Night
Lamoni, Iowa – Graceland University's women's soccer team pulled off a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Baker University in Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) action on Saturday afternoon. With this win, the Yellowjackets improve to 6-8-3 on the season and 3-6-1 in conference play, keeping their postseason hopes alive.
The match's lone goal came just before halftime, as Wissal Rafik found the back of the net at the 44:50 mark. Rafik's goal was unassisted, but it proved to be the difference-maker in a tightly contested match that saw both teams generate chances throughout the 90 minutes.
Graceland and Baker were evenly matched throughout the first half, with both teams taking seven shots. The Yellowjackets came out strong in the early minutes, with forward Emily Carmen leading the charge. Carmen managed three shots on goal, but Baker's goalkeeper, Avery Young, kept the match scoreless with three crucial saves.
Baker had their opportunities as well, including a shot by Peyton Zenger in the 13th minute, which was saved by Graceland's goalkeeper, Jessica Kenward. Kenward was exceptional in goal, tallying 10 saves on the day and keeping Baker off the scoreboard. Despite multiple corner kicks and set-piece opportunities for Baker, the Yellowjackets' defense stood tall, particularly during a string of Baker shots in the 35th and 36th minutes.
As the first half came to a close, Graceland earned a corner kick in the 42nd minute, but it was Baker who threatened to score off a counterattack. However, the momentum swung back in favor of the Yellowjackets when Rafik seized an opportunity just before the halftime whistle, slotting the ball past Young to give Graceland the 1-0 lead.
The second half saw a resilient Baker University side continue to press for the equalizer. However, Graceland's defense, anchored by Kenward, was up to the task. The Yellowjackets allowed seven shots in the second half, but none found the back of the net, thanks to Kenward's consistent goalkeeping and well-timed defensive stops by the backline.
Graceland's offense, while quieter in the second half, managed to generate several chances to extend their lead. Aroa Gallego and Florencia Campodonico both had shots on goal, but Baker's Avery Young maintained her strong form, recording a total of nine saves. However, despite Young's efforts, Baker was unable to crack Graceland's defense.
Baker's best chance to equalize came in the 85th minute when Emma Schieber's shot was saved by Kenward, preserving the shutout. The final minutes saw Baker push forward, but Graceland's defense, bolstered by several key substitutions, held firm.
Head Coach Randall Porter expressed pride in his team's performance after the match, particularly under difficult circumstances. "I first want to thank all the seniors for what they have done in their time as a Yellowjacket," said Porter. "I could not be more proud of the girls for their fight tonight, especially when we were missing several key players due to injury. Other players stepped up, and we found a way to get a much-needed result. Now we turn our attention to an important game on Tuesday night."
The Yellowjackets will aim to build on this victory as they prepare to face Grand View University in their next conference matchup. The match will take place on Tuesday, October 22, at the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines, Iowa, with kickoff scheduled for 5:00 PM.
